Problem Solving in Mathematics Classrooms in Hungary and Germany

01.01.2018

The development of problem solving skills is one of the most important goals in mathematics classes. The different traditions of problem solving in Germany and Hungary can successfully contribute to further development in both countries, for which the planned collaboration should provide crucial momentum.

Subject areas for which there is considerable expertise in both locations and which are to be discussed in particular during the collaboration are:

  • solution of geometric problems in secondary schools
  • problem solving strategies in stochastic systems
  • modelling and application problems
  • use of new technology as heuristic tools

The collaboration shall occur by linking research and a practical approach and shall contribute to the teacher training at both locations to a great extent.

The following forms of collaboration are planned within the project:

  • collaboration of lecturers of mathematical education from Berlin (HU) and Budapest (ELTE) in research and teaching (research stays, collaborative workshops, guest lectures, collaborative publications and lectures at conferences)
  • mutual exchange of student teachers of mathematics with objectives set which are scientific and practical for schools (short and medium-length study stays, work experience in schools)
  • collaborative support of Master theses and dissertations
  • comparative testing of concepts of problem solving in mathematics classrooms in Hungarian and German school classes
  • mutual development of teaching concepts and materials; cooperation with the Hungarian Geomatech project in which the Hungarian partners are involved
  • comparison of the teacher training in Germany and Hungary
